When Should I Start Saving for Retirement?

Today! The earlier you can start planning for your retirement, the better. The rule of compounding interest says that if you begin contributing (even modestly) at 25, you will be able to save more than if you elect to wait until to begin saving until you’re 35.

But don’t be discouraged if you didn’t get an early start. Now is always the best time to begin. Working with a financial advisor, you can create a plan that will work for you and your timeline so you can move forward with confidence.

How Much Do I Need to Retire?

Thinking about how much you’ll need for a retirement (which can last decades!) can be overwhelming, but we have the tools to help. How Do I Invest for Retirement?

There are a variety of tools available for you; a financial advisor can help you determine the mix of solutions that will work for you. From employer–sponsored plans to IRAs to annuities and other investments, you have a variety of options to explore together.

What Variables Should I Plan For?

While we wish we could see into the future, the best way to protect yourself against risks to the retirement you’re dreaming of is to plan for variables. When you include these in your planning, you can rest assured you’re preparing well.

  • Longevity. When retirees talk about risk, many say outliving their money is their number one fear. For a couple age 65 in good health, there is a 49% chance one will live to age 90 and a 20% one will live to 95.1 Your planning should be based on your specific situation – and possibly living longer than you anticipate.
  • Inflation. If you want to maintain your current standard of living, be prepared for ever-increasing income needs. For example, at 3% annual inflation, $50,000 of today’s money will have the spending power of $23,880 in 25 years. That’s why it’s important to build the effects of inflation into your plan.
  • Health Care. As you age, you may need additional health care support. Studies estimate that a couple age 65 will spend over $300,000 on healthcare in retirement —and that does not include nursing home expenses.2 Including healthcare and long-term care costs in your planning is essential for a confident retirement.
  • Market Performance. The performance of the market during the decade prior to your retirement can impact your ability to retire on time and live the life you imagine. You may need to make adjustments to your portfolio in the years leading up to retirement to help reduce your exposure to market risk.
